Transient global amnesia, explains Lucia Borsotti, a neurologist at Ce.Me.Di. of Turin, is an acute neurological condition that strikes suddenly and in the midst of well-being.
It mainly affects people between the ages of 50 and 80, with a higher prevalence in the first decade, that is, by age 60. To date, the causes of transient global amnesia are unknown. “It is known that there are triggers, such as severe emotional or physical stress, exposure to high altitudes or very hot or very cold temperature, but the true origin has not yet been clarified,” the expert reports.
Daniela Pavese, an ophthalmologist at Eyecare Clinic in Milan, explained in the pages of Starbene what eyelid myokymia commonly known as eyelid shaking is and how it is treated.
“It is a very annoying but transient condition,” says Dr. Pavese, “often caused by stress or alcohol and cigarette abuse. Other times, however, it might be a very dry eye that causes the eyelid flickering. Usually the discomfort lasts for a short time, but if the symptoms become persistent, it is then time to see a medical specialist who will be able to assess the severity of the problem.”
